Mabel greeted us at a beautifully maintained main house where the 6 parents slept and a guest house where the 4 young adults slept. There is an ocean pool out front where the view was exquisite! We then spent some time next door at the Reef House Resort and Restaurant. We drank some tasty island drinks and highly recommend the monkey lala drink! Played some cornhole while Mabel, Dottie, and Sammie cooked a wonderful dinner for us. In fact we were treated to the most outstanding island food all week by these great ladies! Excursions to West Bay and Camp Bay beaches were great as was the mangrove and island tour. We did some fantastic snorkeling around Roatan too! WHAT DOES A FAMILY VISIT visit to Ocean Breeze Villa in beautiful Roatan look like? Well, for starters, there’s something for everyone at the Villa, and we have room for big groups — with the right sleeping set-up, we can easily handle a family of a dozen or more, and our property is big enough for everyone to explore and play. From snorkeling off of our private dock to soaking in our own little tidal pool, or paddling out beyond the surf break on one of our handy kayaks or SUPs, everybody can stay busy without even leaving the grounds.

But that’s the beauty of the East End. There’s so much to do, but no set itinerary. Maybe some want to learn a little pirate lore and tour the mangrove channels cut by the privateers hundreds of years ago. Or maybe the kiddos want to take a thrilling zipline above the jungle canopy or visit the local iguana farm. Maybe the moms in the group would enjoy a spa day and some shopping at the tourist village in Coxen Hole. And fishing? It starts off of our dock, but we can also call a local guide for a day spent chasing bonefish and permit on the flats.

The Villa really is a family destination. But, here on the chill East End of the island of Roatan, we do things at a more comfortable pace. When you visit, you’ll understand what we mean.

Flying into Roatan is easy , and the rates are very similar to airline rates you might pay to fly to Belize, Cancun or Cozumel — we’re just a little further south. As you fly in, you’ll be greeted by turquoise water and lush greenery — it’s the perfect welcome to our little island home. When you arrive at Ocean Breeze Villa, you’ll be greeted by our friendly team of caretakers, cooks and housekeepers — they keep the Villa humming along, and they keep guests very happy. If you book a family vacation package to the Villa, you’ll enjoy full-service, and that means you’ll get three meals a day, housekeeping service and even daily laundry service.

Four reasons why Roatan is great for kids who fish

There are fish everywhere. Roatan's waters are home to all sorts of fish, like snapper, grouper, and even barracuda. This means kids have a good chance of actually catching something, which keeps them excited and engaged.

Snacks and drinks are key. Fishing can be tiring, especially for kids. Bring plenty of snacks and drinks to keep them energized and hydrated.

Some great Roatan fishing tips

Roatan boasts fantastic fishing all year round. However, certain times of the year are better for specific types of fish. So, when's the best time to be on this gorgeous Bay Island with your fishing gear? Here’s our best advice:

Generally, you'll have the best luck fishing in Roatan from April to September. The weather is usually calm during these months, and the water conditions are perfect for all sorts of fishing. Inshore angling for bonefish, permit and tarpon is really good through the summer, and, offshore, the billfish, like marlin and sailfish, are at their peak between May and August. Late summer can be excellent, too.

For example, on Roatan’s West End, the annual Roatan International Fishing Tournament is planned in September, and that event draws lots of folks to Coxen Hole and around the western end of the island. The good news? The fishing here, on the East End, where Ocean Breeze Villa is located, is just as good, but you won’t find the crowds. Just some advice in the event you were considering a visit come September.

What's biting in Roatan and when?

If you're dreaming of reeling in a big marlin or sailfish, plan your trip for some of the warmest months of the year in Roatan. This is when these majestic migratory fish are just off our shores, and it’s when most anglers tangle with their trophies.

If you’re into tuna fishing, the blackfin and yellowfin tuna start to show up in April and they’re prolific all the way through July. We regularly catch blackfin tuna just off “the wall,” right out in front of Ocean Breeze Villa. This is where the Mesoamerican Reef drops off into the deep, blue water of the Caribbean. Fishing can be so good, that we rarely have to leave sight of the house.

Bonefish, permit and tarpon

These fish — particularly bones and permit — are a bit more dependent on the tides than are the blue-water fish our offshore folks chase. Most fly fishers will look for dark night skies and modest to moderate tides when they plan a visit to Roatan. Honestly, though, the best time to come down to chase bones and permit on our flats is … whenever you have the time to do it. We had two groups with us a couple of weeks ago, and our guides were telling us that the tides were not ideal. Regardless, both groups saw permit, and some smaller fish came to hand.

Tarpon are around all summer, and the warmer it is, the bigger the fish that move into the shallows. It’s almost never a bad time to chase tarpon here in the Bay Islands.

More offshore targets

Wahoo, those speedy and elusive fish, are more common from October to February when the water is a bit cooler. Dorado (mahi-mahi) are abundant from March to June. You'll often find them near floating debris and sargassum patches, so always take a minute to fish around that structure. Also, shallow wrecks are great fishing targets for pelagics that migrate through.

Bottom fishing

Bottom fishing is good all year round! However, the calmer months from April to September usually make for a more comfortable experience.Weather Wise

Keep in mind that October to January is the rainy season, which can sometimes bring rough seas. Fishing is still possible, but conditions might be less predictable. For calmer seas and generally more enjoyable fishing, aim for April to September.

JUST IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING what you might be in for when you book a full-service package at Ocean Breeze Villa , we thought we’d fill you in. First, all the basics are handled before you even arrive. For instance, if you book a fishing or a diving trip, all you need to do is show up! We’ll have all that taken care of before you even touch down at the Coxen Hole airport.

Next, full service at Ocean Breeze Villa really does mean full service. You’ll wake up to a delicious breakfast, made fresh for you right in the Villa’s kitchen by Mabel and her crack team of cooks and housekeepers. It also means that, when you leave the Villa to go fishing or diving or to take a tour, or even if you just paddle one of our kayaks out beyond the surf break to try and catch a snapper, we’ll be busy making your bed and cleaning up. When you get back, everything will be ship shape.

But, what our guests seem to enjoy the most, is the variety our team offers when it comes time to have a real sit-down meal. Mabel and her team are amazing cooks, and they make use of local ingredients to offer some of the best meals on the East End. Their Creole-inspired fare is appreciated by guests who report back about how great the food was during their stay at the Villa.

Well, we’ve been tasting Mabel’s amazing cooking for years, and we couldn’t agree more. Here are some of her signature dishes, in no particular order.

Fried grouper with rice and beans

Yes, rice and beans is a Creole staple, and most of the folks here on the East End enjoy it on Sundays. But, when we have guests, we rarely serve rice and beans just by itself. Our kitchen crew is fond of pairing it with fried, fresh-caught grouper, fried yuca and a cool, green salad. Wash it down with an ice-cold Salva Vida, and it might be the perfect way to end the weekend.

Fish tacos

We live by the sea, and our fisheries resources are very important to us. With grouper, snapper and jack crevalles readily available, it’s nothing for Mabel and her team to whip a delectable batch of fish tacos. Sometimes, we even get blackfin tuna — talk about a treat! Our team loves to offer our guests a variety of sauces, like pico de gallo, cilantro lime sauce, and, one of our favorites, sofrito salsa, which is a thick salsa made from tomatoes, onions and sometimes peppers.

Island-style barbecue

Yes, much of our dishes come from the ocean, but we do have good chicken and pork resources on the island, and we love to cook with both proteins. And, just like most folks, we love good barbecue! Our island-style barbecue chicken and pork is a head-turner — carefully grilled and served with potato salad, refried beans, pico and corn tortillas, we almost never have leftovers!

Well, Islands , a digital travel magazine, just recently did a short travel piece on the East End, and it highlighted the Villa, and our very authentic “district,” away from the chaos of the more “touristy” end of Roatan near Coxen Hole. The magazine also touched on the East End’s iconic Tiki Boat and wrote about our incredible fishing , diving and snorkeling. They even mentioned our wonderful, Creole-inspired food that we serve to guests who book a full-service stay at the Villa.

Travel insurer says we're the safest bet in the sea

OUR LITTLE ISLAND OF ROATAN is known for its pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters which have made it a popular cruise ship and tourist destination. And, while we’re a part of Honduras, Roatan operates very independently from the mainland. Visitors to Roatan never set foot on the mainland because we are separated by around 40 miles of water.

Why does that matter? Well, in recent months and weeks, you might have heard that the U.S. government has issued a travel warning to Honduras. Sadly, because we’re part of Honduras, tourists think Roatan might be unsafe, or even dangerous to visit.

Third-safest destination in the world

We are happy to tell you that it’s not. In fact, it’s one of the safest destinations in the Caribbean.

According to travel insurance provider InsureMyTrip, Roatan is the third-safest port out of all cruise ship destinations in the world . This is due in part to the island's strong law enforcement presence and its commitment to tourism safety.

Roatan's government has taken several steps to ensure the safety of tourists, including:

Increasing the number of police officers on the island
Establishing a tourist police force
Implementing a 911 emergency response system
Installing security cameras in popular tourist areas

As a result of these efforts, Roatan has maintained its status as a safe and welcoming destination for cruise ship passengers and for visitors arriving daily by plane, too. Visitors can feel confident exploring the island's many attractions, including its beautiful beaches, lush mountain rainforests and gorgeous reefs, and not have to worry.

The invasive fish we're all about eating on Roatan

ON ROATAN, OUR REEFS SUSTAIN US. These magical underwater structures provide habitat for everything from lobsters and conch to our tropical fish and all the corals that cover these incredible subsurface paradises. These are also the places that divers and snorkelers love to visit, and with tourism so vital to our island, it makes sense that we’re very protective when it comes to the health and safety of the reefs.

For instance, it’s illegal to spearfish in the Roatan Marine Park, which circles our island and runs 12 nautical miles out to sea. With so many divers coming to our home to experience the beauty of the Mesoamerican Reef, it’s important to us to protect the fish our visitors come to see and experience.

But there is one exception. The lionfish is an invasive fish from southeast Asia and Oceana, and it’s wreaking havoc on Caribbean waters. Here in Roatan, it’s the only fish divers and snorkelers can target with spearfishing equipment. But there’s a catch.

Spearfishing is only allowed for lionfish

In order to go after lionfish — which, when properly cleaned and cared for, are considered a delicacy — you must first get certified through the Roatan Marine Park. In order to get certified, you must take a one-day workshop at the RMP’s offices in Half Moon Bay on the West End. The fee is $50, and it comes with a certified sling-spear that you can use to target lionfish — and lionfish only.

Lionfish are the first invasive marine fish that have become established in the Atlantic. With no known predators, they are causing damage to coral reefs and native fish in the Caribbean by disrupting the natural ecosystem. This is the reason the Roatan Marine Park is making an exception for spearfishers — the lionfish is bad news for our islands reefs, which means it has the potential to be damaging to our tourism-based economy and our very special way of life here on Roatan and on the other Bay Islands.

Here on the East End, and just off the water’s edge at Oakridge, where Ocean Breeze Villa is located, snorkeling and diving starts right off the end of our private dock. A healthy reef is important to us, and to our guests, many who come to spend much of their time here under the water, exploring this magical place. We fully support the efforts of the Roatan Marine Park when it comes to lionfish control. If you come to Villa and are interested in taking the lionfish workshop, let us know. We can arrange for transportation both to and from the RMP offices, and, when you’re certified, you can stalk the waters of Roatan’s East End for the dastardly lionfish.

A great place to find the 'gray ghost of the flats'

ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR FISH to catch on Roatan is the bonefish. Pound for pound, these legendary flats fish might be the strongest inshore game fish in the world. And, where we are, on the quiet and safe East End of Roatan, chasing bonefish with a fly rod is a great way to spend a day.

The East End is home to several flats and shallows that are ideal for bonefishing. The flats are made up of sand and mud, and many are covered in seagrass. The seagrass provides food and shelter for bonefish, and it also makes it difficult for them to see predators. For anglers, the seagrass makes it tough to see bonefish, at least at first. For most fly fishers, the wisest choice for finding bones is to hire a guide, at least the first time you go out. Since fly fishing for bonefish is almost entirely about sight-casting, getting that “fish eye” tuned in is really important.

Tips for catching East End bones

On typical blonde sand flats in the Caribbean, bonefish seem to appear out of nowhere — their nickname is “the gray ghost of the flats.” But, when they’re hunting for shrimp, crabs, mollusks and even sea worms on the grass flats, it takes a well-trained eye to see them. But, once you know what you’re looking for, you’ll be able to spot the East End’s plentiful bones. That’s half the battle, honestly.

When fishing for bonefish on Roatan's East End, it is important to be patient. Bonefish are generally not easy to catch, and you will probably fail more than you succeed, at least at first.

Here are some tips for catching bonefish on Roatan's East End:

Fish early in the morning or late in the evening. Bonefish are most active during these times of day. Also, pay attention to the tides. On the East End, the tides are usually subtle, but an incoming tide will bring fish in, and they’ll stay on the flats until the tide starts to go out.
Use light tackle — a 7-weight fly rod on a generally calm day is ideal for East End bones. Bonefish are very sensitive and skittish. They spook easily, so a more delicate presentation is required when you see them on the flats.
Use a longer leader than you might think you need. A 12-foot, 12-pound leader and tippet will be about right.
Practice your casting before you get here. If you don’t know how to double-haul cast, you need to learn. Practice casting on windy days, too.
Arm yourself with the right flies. Consider patterns like the Gotcha, Pink Puff and the Crazy Charlie. For shallow flats, use plastic bead eyes. For deeper flats, use bead-chain eyes.

OUR BEAUTIFUL ISLAND of Roatan, perfectly situated in the Caribbean Sea, just off the coast of Honduras, is a lot of things to a lot of people. But, contrary to what you may be hearing in the news lately as the American and Honduran governments posture and argue over immigration and potential deportations under a new American regime, Roatan is not a dangerous destination.

And, where we are at Ocean Breeze Villa , we’re even more safe and secure. Roatan’s quiet East End is perhaps the safest part of the island. And, with the villa located on an island of its own — and with a caretaker on the property at all times — we never worry about our safety.

Known for its stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant coral reefs, Roatan is the exception to the rule when traveling to Honduras. Yes, the mainland can be gritty and, in some areas, lawlessness and chaos is common. But that’s not Roatan.

ROATAN IS THE LARGEST of the Bay Islands off the coast of Honduras, and it’s a diver's and snorkeler's paradise. Its crystal-clear waters, teeming with marine life, offer an unforgettable underwater experience. While the west end of the island is popular for its dive sites, the east end boasts equally stunning snorkeling spots, often less crowded and just as rewarding.

Why Snorkel on Roatan's East End?

The east end is home to healthy coral reefs, showcasing a kaleidoscope of colors and textures. It features diverse marine life — snorkelers will encounter a variety of fish species, from tiny tropical reef fish to majestic eagle rays and even the occasional shark.

WE JUST GOT WORD that a new Margaritaville Resort is planned for the West End of Roatan. With all due respect to the late bard that forged that venerable brand, we’ll keep our Jimmy Buffett on our playlist, but you can have his company’s plastic, overpriced resort.

Truth be told, Ocean Breeze Villa is perfect just like it is. Wind and rain, but no lasting damage from Tropical Storm Sara

WE WATCHED CAUTIOUSLY as Tropical Storm Sara formed to the east of Roatan, and we actually helped a couple of wonderfully understanding guests preemptively reschedule their stay at the Villa in anticipation of heavy rains and wind that the storm was forecast to bring.

And it’s a good thing, too. Sara dumped a lot of rain over the East End, and we got some wind. But, according to our crack team on the ground at Ocean Breeze Villa, the storm moved west and didn’t do any significant damage to the community or to the Villa itself. To say we’re relieved that Mabel and George and the rest of our island family are safe is an understatement.

And we’re so pleased to report that our little slice of paradise is still intact and ready to welcome guests once again .

Named storms are rare

Truthfully, named storms that directly hit Roatan are very rare . Generally, the island’s mountains serve to protect us from the worst of their impacts. But, when storms form to our east or our south … well, those are the storms that we watch closely. And Sara did just that.

Thankfully, Sara was a late bloomer in this otherwise very active Caribbean hurricane season, and she was mostly bark and no bite. That said, parts of Roatan did endure some serious flooding, and the airport in Coxen Hole did close for a time. But, with our guests safely re-accommodated, our staff could focus on buttoning up the Villa and the Guesthouse and work to protect the property as best they could.

It’s important for our guests to know that, should a hurricane or tropical storm like Sarah look to be bearing down on Roatan, we will happily reschedule their stay. The couple that rented the Villa just as Sara looked to be getting pretty serious was able to change their schedule and, very likely, save their vacation – getting stuck on the remote East End during a torrential tropical rainstorm would not have been the best use of their vacation days!

We want your vacation to be perfect

Just remember, we’ll do whatever we can for all of our guests to make their stays at the Villa more comfortable and enjoyable. And that includes rescheduling visits that are foiled by Mother Nature.

Thankfully, that doesn’t happen very often – our location on the southeast side of the island makes these big storms extremely rare. So, if you’re considering a stay at the Villa, know that we’ll do whatever we can to help you reschedule your visit should a named storm throw a wrench in your travel plans.

A once-in-a-lifetime experience

FOR DIVERS AND SNORKELERS, one of the most exhilarating experiences can be an up close and personal encounter with a shark.

Thankfully, these encounters are rarely dangerous. Nevertheless, there’s something very stimulating about sharing the water with some of the ocean’s top predators, even if we aren’t technically on the menu.

And, from Ocean Breeze Villa, there’s one great shark adventure that is among the coolest tours offered in all of Roatan’s East End.

The nurse sharks of Pigeon Caye

Guests at the Villa can meet the award-winning Tiki Boat just behind the Villa for a gorgeous 45-minute boat ride east along the Roatan Coast en route to Pigeon Caye. This submerged island is a beautiful little hummock of white sand and crystal clear water just off the coast of Roatan.

Once here, you'll grab your snorkeling gear and get ready to get in the water. But, just before you get in, the staff will toss a little chum – usually frozen baitfish – into the water.

And, just like puppies coming to the sound of kibble hitting the bottom of the dish, four- to six-foot-long lemonnurse sharks and big, beautiful stingrays will appear out of the ether.

A once-in-a-lifetime experience

We get it. Getting in the water with sharks may not seem like a great idea. But nurse sharks have zero interest in people – we’re not on their diet. These beautiful olive- to gray-colored sharks are regulars on the flats and on the reefs. If you’re an experienced fly fisher, snorkeler or diver, you’ve very likely encountered nurse sharks before.

So, hopping into the water with these incredible fish is absolutely safe. And, so long as you’re smart and don’t do anything to provoke them, they’ll be very content to pick off the suspended pieces of baitfish the Tiki Boat guide and staff have put in the water.

In addition to the nurse sharks, you will also very likely see several large southern stingrays and, if you’re lucky, a spotted eagle ray. These big fish, too, are drawn by the baitfish.

While you’re on the Tiki Boat …

If you’re going to snorkel with the sharks and rays, it’s probably best, on the way to Pigeon Caye to enjoy a soda or a cold bottle of water. But, once the snorkeling is done and you’re headed back to the Villa, grab a cold cocktail from the bartender, or an ice-cold Salva Vida beer and toast your latest adventure.

When you get home, you can tell your friends you went swimming big sharks and lived to tell the tale. Don’t worry. Your secret’s safe with us …

Is Roatan safe? Absolutely

ONE OF THE FIRST QUESTIONS WE GET when we’re working with prospective guests on a visit to the Villa has to do with safety on Roatan.

It’s a logical question these days when international travel can come with very real risks. From European pick-pockets to the threat of kidnapping and extortion in Mexico, the horror stories abound.

But Roatan? Is Roatan safe?

Tourism is our business

Every year, 1.9 million tourists come to Roatan from abroad to experience our island. And, while Roatan is, indeed, in Honduras, we are physically, economically and culturally separate from the mainland. Roatan’s entire economy is based on tourism – keeping our visitors safe and happy is a priority.

We’ve operated the Villa for two decades on our wonderful little island in Oak Ridge, and, honestly, we’ve never experienced an issue where guests were in danger. In fact, Roatan is far safer than visiting some U.S. cities – guns are illegal here, and every ferry and plane that visits the island is carefully inspected.

Roatan is your destination

Certainly, there are some crime problems on the Honduran mainland. It’s a third-world country in Central America experiencing the growing pains common to other countries like it. But visitors to Roatan never set foot on the mainland – all flights from the U.S., Canada and Europe come directly to Coxen Hole.

And once you’re here, you’re important. Tourism is vital to us, so all of our islanders go to great pains to ensure you enjoy your visit and that you feel perfectly safe while you’re here. At the Villa, for instance, we have a caretaker on the property at all times. Additionally, we’re on an island – the only way to get to us is via boat. We may be in the safest little corner of one of the safest islands in the Caribbean.

So, yes, Roatan is safe.

Tips to stay safe

Just like any tourist-centric destination, there are some annoying petty crimes that occasionally happen. But there are ways to protect yourself. Here are some tips:

Don’t engage in hard drugs or prostitution. This is hardly a problem on the quiet East End of Roatan, but near the glitzy resorts, these illegal activities exist. And if you choose to engage in these activities, know that you’re increasing your risks when it comes to safety.
Don’t flash a lot of cash. Just like anywhere in the world, cash attracts attention.
Dress down a bit, and don’t flaunt wealth. You’re on vacation. Shorts, t-shirts and flip-flops are the island uniform – if you sport an Armani bag, you’re telling would-be criminals that you might be a worthwhile target.
Don’t go to unfamiliar places after dark. Again, the Villa is on an island, and you’ll be just fine walking between the Villa and the bar at the Reef House , or even just taking a stroll. But near the resort on the West End, it’s best not to press your luck.
Just as you would in any big U.S. city, be smart. Take in your surroundings, and keep your wits about you. If you feel uncomfortable, get out of the situation. Again, this won’t ever be an issue at the Villa, where we are diligent about guest safety.

We really do take our guests’ safety seriously. That’s why, when you book a package at the Villa – a fishing or a diving adventure, for instance – we’ll meet you at the airport and we’ll take you directly to the Villa in an air-conditioned van. Once at the Villa, we’ll help you get around the East End via boat, and we’ll make sure that any tour or experience you book is perfectly safe.

And the Villa? Again, we’re on an island and we have a caretaker on the property 24/7. Once you’re here, you’ll be able to make yourself at home, and you should feel perfectly safe. We take your safety seriously because your business is important to us.

Try a land-based adventure on Roatan

From parks to shopping, Roatan has much to offer away from the waters of the sea

JUST BECAUSE OCEAN BREEZE VILLA is located on an island doesn’t mean our guests can’t enjoy some of Roatan’s terrestrial experiences. The “mainland” portion of the island is a five-minute ride away via water taxi. Once you’re on Roatan’s main road system, a whole new world of adventure is at your fingertips.

Here are some great ideas for some land-based adventures for guests at the Villa. Each one is within easy reach, and they can all be done over the course of a day. Then, come evening, you can be back at Villa enjoying a light rum punch as you watch the sun set over the Caribbean.

Port Royal National Park

Home to native yellow-nape parrots (photo above) and native Caribbean pines. Port Royal National Park , which is quite small at only 5 square kilometers, is one of the few places where visitors can still see what Roatan was like before colonization. Remember, the Bay Islands — of which Roatan is a part — have endured European colonial influences for more than 500 years. Much of the native flora and fauna are gone, and those that remain are prized. The parrots are threatened, largely by the exotic pet trade. The park is one of the few places birders can visit to see these beautiful birds.

Another feature of the park? Hikers can get out of the heat under the shade of its trees and its elevation. The park, which is located on the south shore Roatan near Santos Guardiola, gets near-constant, cooling breezes from the sea. It’s a great place to visit when it’s hot.

Shopping on Roatan

Have the itch to do a little bargain hunting while you’re on the island? No problem. A taxi ride away from the Villa can put you in the midst of some excellent shopping for Roatan souvenirs and trinkets. Coxen Hole is about 45 minutes from the Villa by car, and, particularly where the cruise ships frequent, Villa guests can find great deals on everything from authentic Roatan arts and crafts to fresh fish pulled directly from the sea.

But the largest shopping in Roatan is in French Harbor, right in the middle of the island. Here, we boast what’s called the “Mega Plaza,” a collection of stores and shops where visitors can find virtually anything they might to help them remember their adventure to Roatan. From locally crafted clothing for both men and women, to much-needed (but often forgotten) items, like camera memory cards, the Mega Plaza has it all. There are also several restaurants in the Mega Plaza, where you can sample some of the excellent Creole cuisine found on Roatan.

There are other smaller shopping destinations, too, particularly on the more populated and developed West End, where you’ll find art galleries and the main office of the Roatan Marine Park, where you can get your hands on dive maps and such.

A zipline adventure

Looking for something a bit more exciting? Roatan offers a couple of zipline adventures that will literally send you flying over the jungle canopy for a thrilling arial ride. From the Villa, it’s an easy taxi ride to one of the zipline outfitters. To make it even easier, we can book it for you and arrange transportation. Then, as is the case for most of the tours and experiences you can take from the Villa, all you need to do is show up at the appointed time.

Final word

There’s lots to do on Roatan, and not all of it involves the clear Caribbean waters. Consider a land-based experience while you visit, and get to know our island for all that it is. Your next trophy is swimming off the beach at the Villa

FOR DECADES, Roatan has been known as a diving and snorkeling destination. The opportunity to ply the waters along the Mesoamerican Reef — the second-largest barrier reef in the world — is one many divers and snorkelers can’t resist.

But one of Roatan’s best-kept secrets is getting out. In addition to being a world-class diving destination, Roatan is an angler’s paradise, too. From fly fishing along the island’s many turtle grass flats to tackling the blue water in search of big, pelagic fish that migrate to and from the island over the course of a year, Roatan offers anglers unmatched fishing all year long.

Pelagic fish

When Roatanians reference “pelagic” fish, they are usually talking about fish that inhabit waters below the continental shelf, sometimes to waters more than 600 feet deep. And, every year, depending on the season, these big pelagic fish make their way inshore to the reef of Roatan. These fish include everything from sailfish and swordfish to tuna, mackerel, mahi mahi, wahoo and even some sharks.

And, on Roatan’s quiet East End, where Ocean Breeze is located right on the beach overlooking the Caribbean, these big, highly migratory fish come incredibly close to shore. In fact, snorkelers can sometimes catch a glimpse of these fish right off the dock of the Villa.

Fishing from the Villa

From the Villa, inspired anglers can book a blue-water fishing trip that can help them connect with these incredible fish. In the spring, it’s very common for anglers to actually catch black-fin tuna within just a couple hundred yards of the Villa — right off the drop-off within a swimmable distance of the beach.

Other fish, like sailfish, swordfish and wahoo, are a bit farther out, but it’s not uncommon for anglers to hook up to these hard-fighting fish within sight of the island. That’s the beauty of the reef. Its structure provides excellent habitat for baitfish upon which big, pelagic fish feed. And, right up against the reef, where the depths change dramatically, is ideal hunting grounds for hungry pelagics.

Stay and play

We’ve already introduced our guests to the growing inshore fishery that’s becoming more and more popular among fly fishers. But for many, our island’s pelagic fishery is still untapped. Despite the presence of some well-known fishing tournaments hosted in Roatan, most who come here come for the diving and the chance to enjoy some great tropical weather and the usual “fun in the sun.”

Let The Reef House show you the seascapes of Roatan's East End

ROATAN HAS BEEN A PRIME DESTINATION FOR DIVERS AND SNORKELERS FOR DECADES. The Bay Islands off the coast of Honduras offer some of the most stunning underwater seascapes on the planet. That’s due, in large part, to the Mesoamerican Reef that skirts Roatan and its smaller islands.

The reef is the second-largest barrier reef in the world, stretching more than 620 miles from Roatan north to Guatemala, Belize and Mexico. The reef attracts unparalleled sea life from all over the Caribbean, which makes it a very desirable dive spot for scuba enthusiasts.

Dive packages booked through Ocean Breeze Villa include three daily dives and an optional night dive if the weather cooperates. The Reef House also offers our guests the use of their tidal pool, which is a bit bigger than ours and is ideal for just soaking and sunning. But, lots of small fish find their way into the pool — it’s a great place for beginner snorkelers to get acclimated to the activity.

Dive 'the wall' with the most experienced outfitter in the area

And, of course, divers using The Reef House have direct access to “ the wall ,” one of the most renowned underwater features in the Caribbean. It's a steep drop-off from the shallow beach flats into the blue water — it’s right off the shared dock that sits between the Villa and The Reef House. Here, you’ll see a mix of pelagic, deep-sea fish that move into the shallows to feed, as well as tropical reef fish that light up any camera viewfinder. It’s a great place for novice scuba divers to visit on their first dive or two.

We have a great relationship with The Reef House, and we can’t recommend the establishment enough. And it’s not just a diving outfitter. The Reef House is also a lodging establishment and it has one of the funkiest and homiest little beach bars and restaurants in Roatan. Guests who want to socialize with the locals and the expats of the East End need only wander a few dozen yards next door where the fun starts each evening. And, on some nights, the bar will also have live music.

Chasing bucket-list fish in Roatan

WHILE MANY COME TO ROATAN'S EAST END for the laid-back atmosphere and the authentic Caribbean lifestyle they can enjoy — even for just a few days at a time — others come for the area’s noted diving opportunities. But we’re seeing more and more visitors coming to Ocean Breeze Villa to take on the inshore fish of Roatan.

Here, they can chase the wily bonefish, the brutish tarpon and the penultimate game fish of the tropics: the incomparable permit.

In July, guest Paul Jones, a 30-year fishing guide from the States, came down to experience the Villa and to check out our area’s permit fishing. A seasoned fly fisher, Jones had been told of our permit fisheries by some previous visitors, and he wanted to see it for himself.

And he did. With local fly fishing guides at his side, Paul ventured into the East End’s hinterlands where schools of permit frequent the turtle grass flats of Roatan. And by the time he left a week later, Paul brought six permit to hand. He was very impressed.

Permit are notoriously hard to catch — some fly fishers go their entire lives without catching one. They are very picky and quick to refuse flies that don’t look just right. They also travel in schools, sometimes hundreds strong. And when something doesn’t look right to one permit in the school, all the fish will spook and disappear off the flats.

They leave many an angler at wit’s end. But, that challenge keeps calling fly fishers back to the tropics, and we’re here to tell you that, if you absolutely must check the permit off of your life list of tropical game fish, there may be no better place to do it than here in Roatan.

In fact, there may be no better place to experience high-quality inshore fly fishing for permit, bonefish and tarpon , which congregate in the mangrove creeks and in the boat basins of the island that’s been home on the colonial map for more than 500 years.

And, from the Villa, a fishing guide is a phone call away — we keep a guide on retainer all year long so our clients don’t have to wait for someone to show up on “island time.” Our guide works with others in the community, so if more than one guide is needed, we can make it happen on a moment’s notice.

If you’re more of a DIY fly fisher, our water taxis can transport you to a number of local flats that teem with bonefish, or you can simply walk out on the beach in front of the Villa and fish the flats right off the beach. Here, bonefish and triggerfish frolic in the soft, protected surf of the East End, and anglers can spend hours putting flies in front of feeding fish.

The rare wildlife of Roatan

Roatan is rich in natural history

ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR TOURIST DESTINATIONS within easy reach of Ocean Breeze Villa on Roatan’s East End is Arch’s Iguana and Marine Park. Here, visitors can see a host of iguanas and other fauna native to Roatan.

Unfortunately, as an island with more than 500 years of colonial exploitation in its past, Roatan’s native animals are often hard to see. Some, like the Roatan spiny-tailed iguana, are critically endangered. People — Indigenous and immigrants alike — have almost eaten this delectable reptile into extinction.

And that’s why the iguana farm exists. In addition to its seafood delicacies ranging from shrimp and warm-water lobsters, Roatan’s Creole menu often features the mild flesh of this indigenous reptile. No, it’s no for everybody — the mere thought of eating a lizard might turn some folks off.

But for Roatanians, the iguana is a staple protein. And, thanks to the efforts of Arch’s , the animal is still available on local menus.

But for tourists, the farm offers a chance to interact with iguanas and to come to understand the subtle beauty of these big lizards.

Wild iguanas on Roatan are very rare. And they’re not exactly like the iguanas found at the iguana farm. Roatan’s native spiny-tailed iguanas are dark in color with white or pale yellow mottling. It’s extremely rare for one of these lizards to be seen in the wild.

While some 4,500 iguanas call Arch’s home, the wild population of Roatan spiny-tailed iguanas, which were given their subspecies definition by scientists in 1987, number only about 4,000 in total.

Other Roatan wildlife

Roatan has a rich natural history. Not only is it home to its unique native iguana, it’s a sanctuary for some very rare native birds, like the yellow-naped parrot. It’s also home to a unique subspecies of coral snake — the Roatan coral snake, which has some of the most toxic snake venom in the Caribbean. Thankfully, it’s very timid and rarely comes into contact with humans. Instead, it eats mice. And it's home to the charismatic Roatan island agouti, a native rodent (pictured above).

And, with tours right from the dock behind the Villa, visitors can take in any number of wildlife-themed adventures, including a visit to the iguana farm or the sloth and monkey rescue center located nearby.

And, of course, if you want to get up close and personal with the wildlife in the sea, you just need to don a snorkel mask and wander right off the Villa’s own dock. In the water, you can take in everything from colorful tropical fish native to the Mesoamerican Reef to invasive lionfish that have found their way onto menus across the Caribbean as a tantalizing delicacy — careful, their spines are toxic.

And, a little farther flung, some guests love the rush that comes with snorkeling with lemon sharks and rays — just another wildlife-centric experience you can enjoy during a stay at the Villa .

A shelter from the storm

WITH ITS LOCATION IN THE WESTERN CARIBBEAN, it makes sense that visitors to Roatan might worry about the next big named storm to sweep over the island and wreak havoc. But, in truth, the East End of Roatan, where Ocean Breeze Villa is situated, rarely endures devastating hurricanes.

Thanks largely to its sheltered location on the south side of the island, the East End almost never takes a “direct hit” from a hurricane. And, because of the depth of the Cayman Trench that lies just off the island’s coast, the Caribbeans waters aren’t as easy for hurricanes to stir up and push massive storm surges ashore.

Off the ‘main drag’

The main hurricane belt in the Caribbean generally tracks north of Roatan. That doesn’t mean the island doesn’t ever get hit or that it doesn’t incur damage from hurricanes. But it’s very rare for a serious storm to directly hit the island.

Now and then, the island will get a good dose of rain or a good bit of wind from the outer bands of a hurricane or tropical storm. But direct hits, because of where the island is situated, are extremely rare. In fact, the last major “direct hit” was when Hurricane Mitch made landfall in October 1998.

Even then, the most marked damage was in southern Honduras, thanks largely to flooding. The storm moved over Roatan and dropped torrential rain. Anything not contained blew away, including clapboard houses and tin roofs. But Ocean Breeze Villa was largely undamaged thanks to its durable construction.

The Mesoamerican Reef

The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is the second-largest barrier reef in the world. Only the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia is larger. This giant protective reef offers some serious protection against storm surges that might otherwise swamp Roatan during a big storm.

And, outside the reef lies the Cayman Trench that reaches depths of more than 25,000 feet . These deep, blue waters are much more difficult to agitate, meaning storm surges are generally modest.

Close eye to the south

The hurricanes that hit Honduras usually originate in the south. Most hurricanes that travel across the Caribbean originate in the west and track east to west over the sea. But, those rare storms that start off the coast of South America are the ones we keep an eye on here in Roatan.

And, even then, these storms tend to impact the mainland of Honduras more than they do Roatan. Our island lies in a sheltered nook in Central America, so we usually only see significant hurricanes once every 25 years or so.

Don’t let storms impact your vacation

Living in the Caribbean comes with no small amount of anxiety when it comes to hurricanes. But we’re very lucky here in Roatan, in that big hurricanes having a direct impact on our island are very rare.

That said, they do happen. And, if you’ve booked a vacation between June and December, there’s always a chance that a hurricane can impact your visit. For that reason, we strongly recommend travel insurance. A good travel insurance policy will protect your trip, reimburse you for canceled flights and missed hotel or resort stays.

Wildlife viewing is best in winter

THE FORECAST MAY SAY RAIN — and, yes, it does rain in the winter in Roatan. But winter in Roatan is also the absolute best time of year to take in the Caribbean wildlife that use the sheltered waters of our island for refuge.

And, while winter is our rainy season (the locals call it the “green season”), it doesn’t rain every single day. We have our share of bright, warm, sunny days during the winter — and, even when it does rain, the weather is a far sight more tolerable than it is up north, where snow, ice and below-freezing temperatures are the order of the day.

Don’t shy away from a winter visit to Roatan — the Villa is a great home base for some incredible wildlife watching, and, of course, for a totally chill vacation away from the craziness of the West End cruise-ship vibe. Here, we’re relaxed and life moves a bit more deliberately. Come see us this winter, where you can do as much — or as little — as you like.

Whale sharks of Utila

Every winter, large numbers of docile whale sharks gather off the coast of Utila, an hour-long ferry ride from Coxen Hole. This gathering of these massive sharks provides a unique opportunity for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts to swim with these majestic fish — for many, it’s a life-changing experience.

From Ocean Breeze Villa, it’s a 45-minute ride to the ferry terminal in Coxen Hole, and then it’s an hour-long ride on the ferry to Utila. Once there, guests can connect with a diving outfitter and experience for themselves the wonders of swimming with the largest fish in the world.

Spinner dolphins right off the deck

If the logistics of a trip to Utila seem a bit much — you’re on vacation, after all — winter time at the Villa is an amazing time to see dolphins right off the front deck of the Villa. Spinner dolphins come to our protected waters during the green season where the feed on small fish, squid and shrimp in the deep waters right along the second-largest barrier reef in the world.

From the front deck of Ocean Breeze Villa, it’s not uncommon to see spinner dolphins cruising right along the deep-water dropoff just off the beach, and snorkelers from our own private dock shouldn’t be surprised when these social and playful mammals stop to check them out. The habitat right along our beach is ideal for these inquisitive animals, and up-close encounters happen all the time.

Whales of the East End

Winter in Roatan is also an excellent time to see whales. Both humpback and pilot whales frequent the waters of the East End in the winter, and it’s common to see both, either from the deck of the Villa or by taking a quick tour of the blue water that’s very close to shore.

The whales gather in the warm waters of the Caribbean to calve in the winter months, so you might see big female whales with newborns plying the near-shore waters of the island before making their annual migration back to the north Atlantic, where they gather off the coast of Labrador, Newfoundland and Greenland in the summer.

Winter permit fishing is incredible

Roatan is a trophy fly-fishing destination thanks to its fertile inshore waters and gorgeous turtle grass flats. And, in the winter, fly fishing for big permit is at its peak. Permit are considered among the most challenging angler targets in the world, and Roatan boasts some of the largest permit numbers in the Caribbean.

In addition to the permit, fishing from the Villa for bonefish, tarpon and a host of other fish along the reef is very good during the winter months. Anglers can even step off the deck of the Villa and fish for bonefish and triggerfish in the soft surf break right along the beach.

Winter in Roatan is magical. Yes, the likelihood of rain is higher this time of year, but the air temperature is downright perfect. Between September and January, the average temperature in Roatan is in the mid-80s, with night-time lows in the mid- to upper 70s.

One of the biggest hurdles we hear from American tourists interested in visiting Roatan is how difficult it is to get to the island. Honestly, that’s simple conjecture.

It’s easier now than ever before to fly to Roatan from the U.S. What’s more, it’s very affordable.

Daily air service continues to improve

Every day, both American Airlines (via Miami) and United Airlines (from Houston) have flights to Juan Manuel Galvez International Airport in Coxen Hole. And, starting this coming winter, Delta Airlines , which now flies only to Roatan on Saturdays, will start daily service from Atlanta .

But those flights must be really pricey, right? Absolutely not.

Depending on when you book and when you travel, you can fly to Roatan for as little as $310, round-trip . And that price isn’t just from hubs like Miami, Houston or Atlanta. No matter where you live in the U.S., if you have access to a reasonably sized airport, you can get to Roatan for a price that might surprise you.

Sure, you might have to stay overnight in Houston, Atlanta or Miami, but that’s a small price to pay for a chance to visit one of the Caribbean’s up-and-coming destinations.

It’s a direct flight

The best part of traveling to Roatan? You can fly directly to Coxen Hole on the West End from the above-mentioned American airport hubs — there’s no need to fly to the Honduran mainland . And, from the international airport in Coxen Hole, you’re a scenic 45-minute van ride to Roatan’s super-chill East End, and, of course, to the homey confines of Ocean Breeze Villa. All of our fishing, diving and experiential packages include a complimentary shuttle to the Villa — no need to hail a cab or futz with an Uber or Lyft.

That said, if you wanted to experience other areas of Honduras, daily flights from the U.S. are also available to La Ceiba on the northern coast. Then, when you’re ready to visit Roatan, you’re a very affordable ferry ride away. The price of a one-way ticket from La Ceiba to Roatan is $27 for adults, $15 for kids and $21 for adults.

A cultural melting pot in the western Caribbean

Over the last few centuries, Roatan has become something of a cultural melting pot. No single Roatanian looks like the other, and that’s largely due to European influences on the island and its people ever since it was “discovered” by the fourth and final Columbus expedition in 1502.

Since that fateful landing, and the ensuing Spanish influence on the island as it was exploited for everything from timber to fish — and people — the island’s population has changed dramatically.

When Columbus landed, the island was populated by the Pech or Paya people, who survived on the resources provided by the sea and the jungle. Over time, as European diseases devastated the local population, and the Spanish, English, French and Dutch took turns mining the island of its natural resources, the population changed.

Today, very few true Pech people live on Roatan, or on the mainland of Honduras, for that matter. Just as the early Spanish exploitation of much of Central America negatively impacted the native Mayan populations of nearby Belize and southern Mexico, the Pech people were all but wiped out.

Who are Roatan’s people today?

Today, Roatan’s people are the products of cultural and racial blends that have taken place over the last 500 years. With the arrival of European influences, and the mingling of Europeans and native Hondurans, like the Pechs, the population began to change fairly quickly. Add in the fact that Roatan was used as something of a processing enclave for the African slave trade, and more cultural and racial elements were added to the mix.

Today, Roatanians are the serendipitous products of a totally random cultural petri dish — much like the populations of the rest of the Americas, Roatanians are a mix of European, native American and African races. And, culturally, all of the racial ingredients contribute to the way the people live today.

So many languages

The official language of Honduras is Spanish. But on Roatan, you’d be hard-pressed to find a local who only spoke Spanish. Most Roatanians speak a Creole dialect of English, but they also speak Spanish, and many understand and speak French.

All three languages speak to the island’s history, first as a Spanish colony, and later, after it was acquired by the English and English-speaking pirates. The French and Dutch influences aren’t as strong, but they’re certainly noticeable, particularly in the Creole cuisine that’s prominent on the island. But, after the Brits took over and essentially drove off the pirates, they ruled Roatan for more than 100 years. It would later fall back under Spanish rule, after a brief time when Honduras was self-governed (although Roatan fiercely resisted outside control for centuries). In 1850, it again fell under British rule and that lasted a bit more than a century, when the territory of Roatan was ceded to the Honduran government in 1965.

The people persist

Today, it’s still a part of Honduras. It’s people, though, are a cultural enigma, the product of centuries of intermingling cultures and races that make them among the most unique and interesting people anywhere on earth.

But perhaps the best quality all Roatanians possess is their innate instinct to be friendly and welcoming. Over the last several decades, Roatan has become a tourism hot spot — today, it’s a frequently visited port of call for several cruise lines, both for its beaches and its diving.

But, on the quiet East End, Roatan is still very real, and very authentic. And, as the Bell family discovered about 20 years ago, the East End offers much the same tourism amenities as the oft-visited West End, but without all the glitz and resort development.

That’s why the Bells bought Ocean Breeze Villa in 2005 — it was a place where they could come, as a family, and feel both welcome and appreciated. And, when they don’t use the Villa, they offer it to guests who are fortunate enough to come and experience the real Roatan.

More importantly, guests at the Villa get to mingle with island’s people, who have proven to be both resourceful and resilient, and who now greet visitors with big smiles and firm handshakes. Yes, the fishing is great and diving is world-class.

A seaside retreat like no other

Sometimes, where you hang your hat when you’re on vacation doesn’t matter one lick. Sometimes, a place to sleep is exactly that — a place to go to bed at night and wake up in the morning before heading and doing whatever it is you’re doing with your time away from the rat race.

But sometimes, where you stay really does matter. Once in a while, a retreat from the daily grind isn’t about the next thrill you’re after or a morning tee time. Every now and then, a vacation is about the view off the balcony or the chance to snuggle down into the sheets and just do absolutely nothing.

We’re a water taxi ride away from zipline or kite-surfing thrills, a fly-fishing adventure on the flats, a shipwreck scuba dive or funky little bar crawl that’ll take you all over Oak Ridge and beyond.

But, for some, the Villa is all the vacation they need.

We want our guests to feel right at home and drop their worries the instant they pick up their luggage from the carousel at the airport. That’s why, when you come to stay at the Villa, it’s your house … your oasis, right on the Caribbean, replete with the ability to do as much (or as little) as you please.

And when you step outside onto the Villa’s beautiful covered porch, you’ll catch the vibe. The turquoise waters of the sea open up to the south, where, on a clear day, you can see the mountains of mainland Honduras.

The Villa’s own dock gives guests access to the turquoise waters of the sea. Snorkeling happens at the house. So does fishing — happy and hungry bonefish often pop up onto the shallow flat and gobble down shrimp and crabs right along the modest surf line. Want something a little bigger? Grab one of the Villa’s kayaks and a fly rod and paddle a couple hundred feet out. Here, everything from jack crevalle and barracuda to hard-fighting black tuna are waiting to hit a well-cast Clouser.

Years of history

The Main House (and the Guest House located behind the Main House) has been in the Bell family for the better part of two decades. After searching the Caribbean for the perfect retreat, Jerri Bell and her family came across the Villa on the calm and quiet East End of Roatan. In 2005, they made an offer, and the Villa has been in the family ever since.

But before the Bells entered the picture, the Villa had been a “going concern” for years, and its previous owners employed a full staff and let the house out to visitors who, like a lot of tourists looking for something a little different, found Roatan and wanted to make it home, at least part of the time.

The Villa was built in 1970 by Patty Spore. She sold it to one of her first renters, a gentleman named Mike Miller. Miller eventually sold the Villa to Todd Nelson in the mid-1990s. Nelson then sold the beachside retreat to the Bells.

All the while, owners of the Villa employed a staff, including housekeeping and kitchen help, groundskeepers and their families — in fact, Mabel, who heads up the Villa’s housekeeping and kitchen crew, grew up on grounds. Her mother, Gina, worked at the Villa for decades.

A proud community pillar

Make no mistake about it. All of Roatan is beautiful. From its manicured beaches and 5-star resorts, to its energetic nightlife and its stunning topography, the island and its cays are postcard worthy all year long.

But there’s just something about the East End that makes it particularly special.

Leave ‘spring break’ behind

Here, away from the “spring break” atmosphere, the cruise ship dock and all the glitz of the more gentrified West End, you’ll find the real Roatan.

We get it. Some folks want the sand raked clean every morning, and they’re good wearing a wristband and hopping from crystalline pool to crystalline pool, all while enjoying bottomless piña coladas and the buffet that never seems to end.

A get-away on your schedule

Here, you can catch a water taxi to one of several funky little bars and restaurants on the East End, or to the taxi stand, where you can grab a four-wheeled taxi and go and do some of the things that might be on your list. Or, if you want to try your hand at chasing billfish off the southern coast of the island, your guide and outfitter are a phone call away. Fly fishing for wily bonefish? You can actually do that in front of the house in the skinny waters of the Caribbean as they lick the beach. But a good guide can meet you behind the Guest House and have you on a far-flung permit flat in 30 minutes.

Snorkeling? Again, just hop off the dock. But if you want to explore a shallow shipwreck or literally swim with the lemon sharks off Pigeon Cay, you’re a boat ride away. If you want something more mellow, wander next door to the Reef House bar, order a cold piña colada and slip into the spacious tidal pool that’s protected from the modest surf break of the ocean.

Be more than a visitor

The East End is unique in that you can easily become a part of its unique community, even for just a few days. With a handful of lively bars and restaurants — all within a short ride on a water taxi — you can join Roatan’s lively expat community for an evening of live music, or talk with the locals about the best places to go diving or fishing.

Life is slower here. And smiles are bigger because of it. The East End is the real Roatan, not the plastic version you might experience if you were to just hit the shops on a shore excursion from the cruise ship. Pirate Lore Runs Strong and Deep on Roatan’s ‘East End’

For the better part of 500 years, Roatan has embraced its colonial roots, and with it, the salty history of piracy.

According to historians, the first recorded instance of piracy on Roatan happened in 1577, when British pirates raided Guanaja. After being beaten back by the island chain’s Spanish protectors, the pirates moved along, but continued to raid and plunder other settlements in Roatan.

In 1638, the British established an official colony at Old Port Royal on Roatan’s “east end,” with the intent of having colonists harvest timber from the mountainous slopes above the protected port. Timber, though, was only part of the commerce the Puritan settlers practiced — in time,

Port Royal became a pirate stronghold, and Spanish ships moving cargo from Central America home to Europe were frequently targeted by Port Royal-based pirates.

The raids became untenable to the Spanish crown, and in 1650, Spain sent a formidable naval force to Port Royal and basically wiped the settlement off the map. In time, the community regorganized, and many decades later, piracy would again be an issue. But the Spanish raid taught the survivors and their progeny an important lesson: a pirate’s life should be mobile and secret. Hiding out and moving about was a better option than trying to operate from an established port.

So, in the decades to come, Roatan’s pirates and, eventually, its sanctioned privateers, took to carving small hideouts along the southeastern coast. Here, they carved little escape routes through the mazes of mangroves and established hidden communities high in the mountains.

Over the next century as Britain, Spain, France and other European nations with imperial aspirations plundered the Caribbean and the native settlements of Central and South America, Roatan became something of a pirate hideout. Its hidden deepwater ports were ideal for “disappearing” after a raid, and the islands provided shelter from storms and swarms of patrolling naval vessels from both Spain and Britain.

By the late 1700s, after being expelled from the mainland of Honduras and Belize, British settlers once again occupied the site of Old Port Royal, and, once again, its citizens turned to harassing Spanish cargo vessels. And, once again, in 1782, the Spanish fleet moved in and destroyed the village, forcing the residents to flee. According to historians, the Spanish navy took out 500 structures — the community would never boast so many buildings again.

Today, the pirate history runs deep in the East Enders of Roatan — the mangrove mazes are still there, and you can see them yourself by meeting a tour boat right from the dock at Ocean Breeze Villa. Port Royal, too, is still around, and today it’s a diving and snorkeling paradise, as well as becoming increasingly well-known as an inshore fishing destination.

On land, the pirate past can still be found in the descendants of the island’s first European visitors, but piracy is no longer a thing. Instead, Port Royal marks the “end of the road” that traverses the island of Roatan. But, it should be noted, in the late 1960s, a chestful of silver bars was supposedly plundered from a pirate hiding place on a nearby Island (the Cow in the Cow and the Calf islands).

Today, visitors to Ocean Breeze Villa can take a Tiki Boat cruise — complete with choice cocktails, appetizers and even a stop for snorkeling — and sail right by Old Port Royal, the contentious staging point for East End piracy starting in the late 1500s.

The Creole culture is alive and well in Oak Ridge, and guests who come to Ocean Breeze Villa for a little R&R will enjoy a literal taste of it.

The Villa’s crack kitchen and housekeeping crew is well-versed in using locally sourced ingredients to craft mouthwatering Creole dishes for guests looking for something a bit different when it comes to dining in the Caribbean.

And, all throughout the East End, guests have some unique dining options. They can enjoy home-cooked meals right at the Villa, or, with a little planning, they can embark on a “dining tour” of the area over the course of their stay.

The Ocean Breeze Villa dining experience

With the purchase of fishing, diving or retreat packages, Ocean Breeze Villa guests are treated to three meals a day. You might be surprised what Mabel and her team can put together in the Villa’s kitchen while you’re out doing your thing on Roatan’s chill East End.

From conch ceviche to delectable fish tacos, Mabel and her crew have perfected the dining menu at the Villa. Mabel literally grew up at the Villa — her mother worked at the Villa for years before retiring and passing the spatula down to her daughter.

The best part? Every meal is authentic. It’s not mass-produced and served under heat lamps, and the only line you’ll wait in is the line for seconds. Under Mabel’s watchful eye, traditional Creole fare that consists of rice, beans, chicken, pork and fresh seafood is expertly prepared and presented.

Other options on the East End

While the Villa’s meals are hard to beat, guests who want to “get out there” and take in the local fare have plenty of options. Just a few houses down, fishing guide and entrepreneur Michael Dobben has opened a small diner that also features a tidal pool that holds rescue sea turtles, tarpon, snook and bonefish. Guests can enjoy a meal and get in the water and feed turtle grass to the aquatic reptiles and feed the fish by hand, too.

Just next door to the Villa is the Reef House , a local watering hole that features some really good dining options. If you want to try something new while you’re staying in the Guest House or the Main House , just wander next door and grab dinner and a few cheap cocktails. On certain evenings, you can even take in some live music. You’ll likely encounter some of the East End’s locals, including expats from all over the world who have settled here for the lifestyle you’re experiencing during your visit.

“We have a really great relationship with the Reef House,” says Ocean Breeze Villa proprietor Jerri Bell. “It’s a great little option for socializing with the local crowd, and they offer a larger tidal pool area for folks who want to go swimming, but don’t necessarily want to be right over the reef.”

Farther east, near Port Royal, and reachable by water taxi, guests can enjoy some of the best homemade tortillas on the East End with a visit to Jerlene’s Place, a very casual lagoon-side diner where the smiles are big and the service is almost as good as the food. Jerlene is the jovial owner and the chef at the little open-air diner that serves fresh seafood, pork and chicken.

And, of course, no visit to the East End is complete without a sunset dinner cruise on the local Tiki Boat . Enjoy great local cuisine and an open bar as you take in the stunning views of the cays, mountains and the reef aboard the beautiful tour boat. It’s a very cool experience.

About 40 miles from the mainland, Roatan is world-renowned for its diving options – and perhaps the best stop for someone looking to see what Central America has to offer beneath the surface.

Roatan is positioned on the second-largest barrier reef in the world. Divers to the area are spoiled by a wide variety of scuba experiences, from coral gardens and caverns to walls and wrecks like the El Aguila and Odyssey. And it’s all super accessible, located just a few minutes from the shore.

“Here on Roatan it’s pretty much like honeymoon diving, really simple and really easy,” said Roatan Marine Park Patrols and Infrastructure Coordinator Nicholas Bach. “Usually the visibility is remarkably good, there aren’t really any strong currents to name of, and the dive sites are all really close by.”

For those travelers that prefer not to dive snorkeling is a great option, you can take your fins and mask to the end of the pier and hop right in. the Beach is also a great alternative it is often ranked among the finest beaches in the world

Local Mangrove tours are very popular, there are 4 types of Mangroves in the area Black Mangrove, White Mangroves, Red Mangroves, Button wood Mangroves.These trees have the ability to survive in the salty inter-tidal area by the seacoast. Red mangroves colonize the seaward fringe. These give way to muddy zone of Black mangroves and eventually stretch to the land where White mangroves and Button wood dominate.Mangrove forest provide a vital service by protecting the coast from hurricane and storm damage. They stabilize the shoreline and trap river sediments, preventing the mud from being deposited on the coral reefs.

Mangrove leaves, nectar and fruit, feed a variety of animals above the water, Decomposing leaves in the water feed an entire different ecosystem. Mangroves serve as important nursery grounds for many marine animals, including valuable species like bonefish, snappers, lobsters, conchs, and shrimps. The Mangrove tour feels magical with a mystery in the shadows and around every turn. You can imagine how it use to be when indingenous people lived here and then when the pirates came and hid along the coast. Many say there is still buried treasure in the hills of Roatan. There are many guides that provide Mangrove tours through the area but our caretaker George has been guiding tours through the Mangroves for many years and is one of the best. He has many stories about the mangroves and the area he grew up in.

Oak Ridge

From French Harbor the road cuts inland along a central ridge to give superb views of both the north and south coasts of the island. After about 14km the road reaches Oak Ridge a small seaside community that lies on the south side of Roatan heading east. The scenery surrounding this part of the island is very much portrait-like, highlighted by a backdrop of interlaced hills that converge with the sea and meet with a bounty of brightly painted wooden houses, suspended on stilts, and clustered side by side – an image that definitely takes you back to the Roatan of yesteryear.

A small sea side community a fishing port Fishing used to be the focal point of this town and its surrounding areas, still evidenced by the cluster of creatively named commercial fishing boats seen docked throughout the bay. There are some nice beaches to the east of town, accessible by boat from the main dock or walking down the path from our home to a public beach. Most people travel by boat to nearby communities through the mangroves. Our home can only be reached by boat it’s a five minute ride that allows you to see Oakridge and Oakridge Cay the way the locals see Oakridge from the water. Looking up at the brightly colored homes where kids are playing and dogs are enjoying the sun. A place where the hills are so lush and green you can imagine them alive. A gateway that lets you know you are entering a different world one that is in rhythm with the ocean.

Cayos Cochinos

Located roughly 60 km (37 miles) off the northern coast of Honduras, the Bay Islands are primarily made up of three larger islands: Roatán, Utila, and Guanaja. There are also more than 60 islets and keys, many of them uninhabited, plus the Cayos Cochinos archipelago closer to the mainland. The Marine scientific research station and the Marine Natural Monument, the laws prohibit all types of commercial fishing use of nets and traps within the park. The islands are surrounded by sandy beaches optimal for the nesting of the Carey sea turtle (Hawksbill).

Some of the cays or atolls are privately owned, and in one of them there is a community of Garífuna fishermen where you can have lunch, and enjoy a tasty fish fried in coconut oil, accompanied with rice and beans, and banana slices. You can also enjoy the famous drink prepared with roots, leaves and bark of plants and liquor that has medicinal and aphrodisiac properties. Moreover, you can buy handicrafts made in your presence. In front of the cay you can enjoy a swim, and at the same time snorkel in its crystal-clear waters.

Why we choose Roatan the pearl of the eastern Caribbean

Many people may not know much about Roatan or have even heard of it. This island and a few others which lie about 40 miles north comprise the Bay Islands of Honduras. People always ask why did you choose Roatan? And there are many answers; the lush environment, mountainous and under developed with starry skies and beautiful sunsets, gorgeous wildlife and crystal clear water with a spectacular reef. My number one reason was Roatan is easy to get too and had everything important to us, diving, fishing, hiking, wildlife, good food, and easy to navigate.

We looked at many islands before deciding on Roatan. We went to Belize, all over Central America, Granda, St Lucia, Curacao and more, but for us Roatan couldn’t be beat. It is a 2 hour flight direct from Houston or an hour and half from Miami or Atlanta, Delta, American, and United all have non stop flight to Roatan. We could actually get to Roatan from Austin TX in less time than it took us to get to the gulf coast of Florida where we had a house prior to our current Roatan home. There are many other reasons we chose Roatan the diving and snorkeling with the second largest reef in the world, the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, which rivals even the Great Barrier Reef in beauty and sea life. Roatan has been popular with divers since long before we purchased or home. The fly fishing is world class, permit and bonefish are abundant.

There is also off shore fishing and it is a short trip to deep water which really makes a difference. The weather we have on the East side of the island stays fairly cool because of the trade winds and the breeze is always pleasant. The geographical position of Roatan allows us to avoid hurricane impact and tempers the intense weather during that season. There is so much wildlife to see right from our porch; Dolphins, Whales, Octopus, Eels… the list goes on. The location of our home is on a cay next door to the Reef House Resort so there’s always a place to have a drink or a meal and meet new people. We are in a local area and the islanders are very generous, industrious, friendly, most speak English and Spanish and US currency is accepted. There are so many reasons I chose Roatan, it is a delightful Island with friendly people, stunning beaches, beautiful hills of lush landscaping, marine wildlife and the National park to explore. It is hard to fully understand until you visit our home and experience it yourself.
